dash VIN plate

I'm not aware of 69s using some special rivet like Rosette rivets I have seen on Corvettes. I have torn down a lot of Mustangs and even my 68 Mustang Bullitt car had the dash vin pried off if it and looked to have standard rivets left with the corners of the VIN. Gary

The car is surprisingly clean and rust free. The previous owner did make some modifications and unfortunately repainted (with a color change) the whole car. I want to just start from scratch and redo the car.

Technically removing a VIN plate even for resto purposes is considered illegal I have been told. I would mask off the original wrapping the plate with something that ill not stick to it then duct tape the whole piece to protect.

 Altering  a tag is  illegal not removing and replacing.  Given the nature of most media blasters there is no way I would ever send a car out to be media blasted or her body and paint with the original tag in it

I have to agree. I have heard several horror stories of destroyed tags by over zealous media blasters. I have to believe intent plays into he statutes.

If its your car and the tag is removed for clean up and replaced, there is no malicious intent. Totally different from, say a rebody.
