What Cobra's did Steve McQueen actually own?

Or did he ever own any?  Someone told me he never actually did, but rather just was lent a couple different ones over the years.  What's the truth?  inquiring Shelby minds want know.

According to McQueen's Machines - The Cars and Bikes of a Hollywood Icon by Matt Stone, he didn't.

In the sidebar, he was given use of CSX2174 for a few months with the goal to convince McQueen to buy it. "When he showed no interest in doing so the car was returned to the factory at Shelby's request. . . ." It was then sold to the Francis Motor Car Company in Portland OR.

Thanks,  I had a suspicion my friend was correct.  Funny, this pic of McQueen pulling into his house driving a Cobra was recently posted by Krelboyne on another thread, and it helps to make people think he owned one or something.

When I posted that photo, I indicated that the author/photographer indicated that it was Steve's car in the caption.

Who wouldn't want a free Cobra to drive around?  Today's celebs are no different.  Free Loan = Good.   Now pay for it = No Thanks.

He got into pick-up trucks had over 50 at one time, always motorcycles and later he got into rotary engine propeller planes (bi-planes) his dad (which he never met) was a barnstormer pilot.

Yep. That's why McQueen isn't listed in the Registry as an owner, but is mentioned as having enjoyed a loaner or two.

Sometime back in the late '70's early '80's was at a car dealership in Beverly Hills. They had a red 427 and told me that it was owned by Steve McQeen. Got back home and was trying to decide ito by the car. After deciding to, it was sold to someone in Reno. Guess the salesman's facts were alittle inflated!
