Is there a way to see if a car in in the registry if you have a VIN?

As it pertains to 65-67 you can look a car up by the Shelby VIN only. You can not look up a 65-67 Shelby by the Ford VIN for extra security reasons . For 68-70 Shelby you can look up a car by the VIN.

I'll add to what Bob has stated above, for the earlier Shelby products, you could send the VIN to the appropriate SAAC registrar for confirmation of it's validity.

It's a 68 that I'm interested in purchasing. Looking for any known history.

The Shelby VIN is different from the Ford VIN?

The Shelby VIN is the Ford VIN with an added five digit extension.

If you post the extension, everything known can be revealed.

Example:

8T02R204798-03206 is a full Shelby number. However, "3206" will be enough to identify the car.

You can buy the registry here:  https://saacstuff.com/

Or contact the registrar like mentioned earlier. There currently is no online database for the 1968 cars.
