The Shelby American (Winter 2021)
Then it was shipped to Manheim Auc- tion in Manheim, Pennsylvania and purchased by Phil Leone from Brook- lyn, NewYork. By mid-2015 our business had been doing well and I was saving funds and starting to look for a 1966 GT350H. I wanted a car that was orignal with matching numbers and good paint. Of course, it had to be black and gold to match the 2006 GT-H. In 2016 SAAC-41 was at the Mid- Ohio Sports Car Course. We trailered the Shelby GT-H to Ohio. It was the 50th anniversary of the Hertz Shelby. On Thursday we did four laps round the track with 36 other Hertz Shelbys. We also participated in the 2016 cruise to Shawshank, the Ohio State Refor- matory in Mansfield, Ohio where the movie of that name was filmed. About fifty cars participated. The cruise went through the town- ship of Shelby, Ohio. Most of the busi- nesses had “Shelby” in their name. On Friday was back to the track for some vintage racing. At the Friday night program we learned the Hertz “Rent- A-Racer” was a urban myth and never actually used officially by Shelby American or Hertz. On Saturday we entered the popular vote car show. After saying all our goodbyes, we headed back to Maryland. In 2017 the SAAC convention, #42, was in Indianapolis, Indiana. Three of us decided to drive out: Tim Brilhart with his 2017 GT350, Don Pealer in his 2014 wide-body Super Snake and JR and myself in our 2006 Shelby GT- H. Don had made arrangements for a personal tour through the Flat Rock Mustang plant outside Dearborn, Michigan, where our 2006 GT-H was build. We drove most of the night, ar- riving there at 7:00 a.m. It was a two and a half- hour tour. Our tour guides were the plant manager, Ralph Arning and chief engineer Art Hyde. We next headed north to the Henry Ford Mu- seum and took that tour. We still had a four-hour trip to Indy. We got close and stopped at a Motel 6 overnight. The next morning, we made it to the track. We ran the four parade laps around the Brick Yard. On the first day we did the 25 mile cruise to the Dreyer Reinbold Race Shop for a tour. For lunch we motored to the Stacked Pickle Restaurant and all the cars were parked for a group photo. On Friday night the club held a re- ception at the Indianapolis Raceway Museum. We saw 100 years of ex-race cars and living legends. On Friday we watched the vintage race. On Satur- day we entered the popular vote car show. Our trip was like a 2200-mile road rally. After a two year-long search looking at a lot of black-and-gold GT350s, in May of 2017 our Shelby GT350H showed up. Tony Conover and Curt Vogt found the car in Connecticut. Curt shipped the car down to Perform- ance Motors in Hanover, Pennsylvania on a Friday. Dale Spahr, Tony’s busi- ness partner, asked if they should call me to tell me they had my car.
